A fire brigade had already existed for a long time in the hamlet of Sadova Veche.  During the 90s however the corps was disbanded.  Only a fire brigade museum established by the father of Anton Grüber, the current commander of the fire brigade, remains.  After a century of service 2 horse-drawn fire ‘engines’ dating from 1896 are housed at the museum. In 1996 there was the 100-year celebration.

In 2006 the city of Geel donated a modern fire engine to Slatina-Timis.  The fire engine left empty equipped only with a high pressure system on either side.  The Geel fire brigade drew up a list of all remaining equipment required to operate the engine from either hydrants or open water and to operate at low pressure.  The hoses were purchased by Slatina-Timis council, partially subsidized by the Geel Romanian Committee, naturally with the associated Storz connectors to ensure compatibility

However, it was still challenging to re-establish the fire brigade.  That many of the previously active firemen had since moved abroad and the lack of a fire chief to motivate the team did not help the situation.  The mayor recognized the importance of the project but still it muddled on.

In May 2010, together with 2 firemen from Geel, the fire engine was tested with the participation of the local volunteer force. After some minor adjustments the fire engine proved to be ready for use. The main problem was the clogged water mains. The metal water pipes had not been rinsed and were largely blocked by calcium deposits. The hydrants only offered silt. {gallery}brandweer2010{/gallery}The council developed a plan to renovate the water mains by 2013 and to switch from river water to spring water. The Geel Romanian Committee bought a portable Honda pump to allow the fire engine to be filled using ground water.

Anton Grüber was elected to the city council during the last local elections in June 2012.  He lives in Sadova Veche and his family has produced firefighters for generations.  He resurrected the fire brigade on a voluntary basis.  The Geel Romanian Committee supported Anton and the new fire brigade was much publicized during the spring jogging event and the annual village festivities.  Marc, a volunteer fireman in Geel, provided invaluable support.  Training drills, conferences and a large scale demonstration on the Sunday following the jogging event were organized in collaboration with the mayor.

The donation of high quality helmets and overalls by the Geel fire brigade provided a much needed boost.  Today the force is made up of 15 enthusiastic firefighters, including 2 professional firefighters, lead by Anton Grüber.  Both the training and equipment are maintained appropriately.  In July 2013 the recently formed group took second prize in the provincial competition for volunteer firefighters.

brandweercorps2013aIn September 2013 new equipment was added by the committee including gloves, boots, crowbars, bolt cutters and other insulated materials.  Additionally a Stihl chainsaw was purchased.{gallery}albumbrandweer1{/gallery}In October, during a training mission lead by Marc, yet more comprehensive equipment followed.  To facilitate night-time interventions a Honda generator, spotlights, stands and cables were added; a toolbox, angle grinder, spades, fire swatters, axes and mattocks also purchased.  On top of this the fire brigades of Ieper and Dendermonde donated further protective clothing.  Gifts were also received from Brabo and Holmatro NL donated a complete set of hydraulic rescue tools.  The firefighters in Slatina were overwhelmed by this generosity and by the quality of the materials they had received for their brigade… operating almost without budget..{gallery}brandweerholmatro{/gallery}On Friday 11th October an evacuation exercise was held at the local school.  The exercise was a great success.  The speed and discipline with which the children were lead to the playground was nothing less than remarkable.  The exercise was supervised by officers from the military fire brigade stationed in Caransebes.{gallery}brandweerevacuatie{/gallery} A subsequent visit from the military corps in Caransebes addressed the possibilities for further cooperation in the region.  The corps was able to provide training in the use of the hydraulic rescue equipment and looked at the possibility of one of the volunteers from Slatina to follow a professional training course in Timisoara.  The volunteer force is not resting on its laurels.  They have recently renovated a leaking roof, repaired a sunken concrete garage floor and prepared a separate locker room for the storage of the protective equipment and uniforms.
